I believe 75% of our personality is shaped in the earlier years, up to the age of 25 on the basis of family's customs and traditions and also the kind of exposure received during the education. This is based on my observation, I may not be correct completely.
I agree with you to a large extent that we are not majorly influenced by the people around us. A lot depends on the perception one has about others or the scenarios s/he is currently in or faced in the past.
